Parking spots
Although the local administration has relevant information about the location and availability of parkings in Trento, they are often incomplete or outdated. A valid alternative to the use of institutional resources to obtain more reliable information about mobility infrastructure such as parking spaces is crowdsourcing, that is the collection of data by the citizens themselves.
There are a number of reasons to believe that this method seems to be the most appropriate:
- first and foremost, the citizens are the main users of the city’s infrastructure and services and have a far better knowledge of specific areas around the city
- secondly, crowdsourcing enables citizen participation in the decision making process which is inevitably based on the availability of data and information

In Trento the focus will be on the following types of parking spaces:
- Bike
- Car
Within the project, the local administration can take advantage of two types of crowdsourcing tools:
- Online crowdsourcing platforms - where registered users identify the parkings using Google Street View and provide specific information about their occupancy
- i-Log app - by means of which the citizens of Trento can provide information about the location and occupancy status of the parkings
A prize-based incentivization strategy encourages the citizens to meet specific thresholds in terms of number and quality of the information provided.
Finally, the data about mobility infrastructure coming from different sources (institutional, private and crowdsourcing) are integrated and visualized on a dedicated and interactive map on the dashboard.
Results
During the project several challenges were launched both through the Virtual City Explorer and using the i-Log app to collect data about bike racks and yellow parking spots around the city.
These data have been merged together with the data already owned by the Municipality and can be viewed on an interactive map in the citizen dashboard: QROWD | Dashboard
