CIE (Electronic Identity Card)

The electronic identity card allows citizens to access the online services of public administrations and private entities that allow its use with the highest levels of security

The Italian electronic identity card (CIE) is the identification document that has replaced the identity card in paper format. The purpose of the introduction of the CIE is to improve the level of security by adapting the supported features to international standards and anti-cloning and anti-counterfeiting standards for electronic documents. The CIE, together with SPID and the provincial / regional / national service card, constitutes one of the authentication tools for accessing web services provided by the Italian Public Administration.

 

"Enter with CIE" is the identification scheme that allows access to digital services provided online by public administrations and private entities. By pressing this button you can authenticate yourself with your electronic identity card.

There are several ways in which you can access the enabled online services: 

  • Smartphone: the user can access the service using a smartphone with a NFC interface and the "Cie ID " app, thus allowing the reading of the CIE. This video shows how to access online services with CIE using the Cie ID app: https://youtu.be/w3UCp-ewts0
  • Computer: access to the service is made via a computer to which a contactless smart card reader is connected in order to read the CIE. To enable the functioning of the CIE on your computer you must first install the "CIE Software ".   • Computer and  smartphone: This PDF tutorial shows how to access services using the computer in the first phase, showing you a QRcode with which you can then identify yourself through the Cie ID app .

How can I apply for an electronic identity card?

The electronic identity card can be requested at your own Municipality of residence, at the Municipality of residence for citizens residing in Italy and at the Consulate of reference for citizens residing abroad. For the latter, the methods of release are indicated on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation .

As regards the Municipality of Trento, the citizens must go to the Municipality and bring a passport photo, in paper or electronic format (in this case via a USB support). The passport photo must be of the same type as the one used in the passport. Instructions on how to take the photo correctly are available in the "Photo acquisition method " section on the website of the Ministry of the Interior.

Before issuing the document, it is necessary to pay the sum of € 16.79 in addition to the fixed and secretarial fees, where provided, as consideration for the issue of the CIE at the municipal coffers. You must keep the payment receipt number.

The applicant will receive the CIE at the address she/he indicated within 6 working days of the request. A delegated person can collect the document, provided that his / her personal details have been provided to the municipal operator at the time of the request.
