The building, now hosting the Faculty of Economics, was inaugurated in 1894 by Emperor Franz Joseph to house the Provincial Council for Agriculture and the Sericultural Institute.

The Council’s purpose was to study agriculture in Trentino in order to improve production and promote the growing of mulberry trees for sericultural purposes. Silkworm farming spread in Trentino during the Hapsburg rule and it represented one of the main sources of income for the local rural population. The Institute gave strong impetus to silkworm farming also thanks to the microscopic “cellular“ selection of silkworm eggs following the Pasteur method, to the point that in Belle Époque times they were exported to several European countries. In 1985 the ownership of the building passed to the University of Trento that totally restored it in order to house the Faculty of Economics.
