The gate was an opening in the 13th century town walls from which to access the farming areas close to River Adige, until the river itself got deviated in 1858.

Surrounded by 19th century buildings, it was partly buried by sediment frequently brought by floods. It is characterized by a large ogival opening and by some short sections of the parapet-walk, which are crowned by a four-sided tower opening on the inside.
