Together with the adjacent convent - today “Giovanni Prati” High School - the church was built for the Poor Clares in 1525 in the classical Renaissance style, traces of which can still be admired on the entrance door. The facade is dominated by the sculpture of the Holy Trinity, which was renovated in a Baroque style in 1666.

On 13th December 1545 the procession that officially opened the Ecumenical Council of Trento started from here, involving 4 cardinals, 25 bishops and archbishops, 5 generals of religious orders, other delegates and the whole clergy of Trentino. In the following years the church was attended by Council Fathers, who in 1547, before moving to Bologna, celebrated here the last Mass.
In 1803 the church was suppressed and stripped of the altars and of the main sacred furnishings, while the convent was used as barracks. In 1861, it was refurnished with altars and paintings from other churches in the city and it was reopened for worship.
The facade is characterized by an exuberant plastic decoration with festoons, volutes, draperies, angel heads and obelisks. Of particular artistic interest are the seventeenth-century main altarpiece by Martino Teofilo Polacco, coming from the church of San Marco, and the two side altars: on the right side there is a decoration showing the Cathedral of San Vigilio with the second bell tower which was never realized.
