The Fort of Cadine was part of the first group of permanent Austrian fortifications defending the connecting roads to Trento; together with the Doss di Sponde it composed the barrier of the Cadine furrow.

The road cut was built between 1860 and 1861 with the aim of blocking the access to Trento by checking the Bus de Vela. The closure of the road axis was not entrusted only to the door but to the whole building: this feature makes it unique among the Trentino road cuts.
The fort is a construction in limestone blocks, equipped with casemates for the artillery and fusiliers. Some service areas are underground: going through a tunnel it was possible to reach an artillery position. The fort was connected to the Doss di Sponde blockhouse above by a military road.
Disarmed in 1915, it served also later as a road control. The Autonomous Province of Trento oversaw the restoration, which began in 2006, respecting the original construction techniques and reconstructing the missing wall parts by analogy. The spaces of the fort have been set up with a multimedia desk,a dynamic model, installations and explanatory panels that illustrate the themes of the Great War and the Trentino fortified system.
At the beginning of 2018, the fort received the European Heritage Label provided by the community action of the same name, approved by the European Parliament and by the European Council. This brand is aimed at enhancing the community cultural heritage, promoting mutual knowledge among citizens, helping to intensify the sense of belonging to the European Union and to strengthen intercultural dialogue.
The Fort is part of the circuit of the forts of Trentino, promoter, among other things, of “Sentinelle di pietra: from fort to fort on the Path of Peace” a rich review of events that meet and celebrate the places in the summer months which, perhaps most of all, have marked the history of Trentino in the last 100 years.
The Fort of Cadine is open only in certain periods of the year: check in advance opening times HERE.
