Ancient seat of the Consular Magistrate, the Municipio Vecchio includes a number of buildings stretching between via Cavour (the former Contrada di Santa Maria neighbourhood) and via Belenzani (the former Contrada Larga neighbourhood).

Its Eastern façade was completely rebuilt in the Neo-classical style by engineer Antonio Bassi in 1837-1838. It highlights a civic eagle and four 18th-century statues which used to be located in the garden of the Castello del Buonconsiglio. The Latin motto MONTES ARGENTVM MIHI DANT NOMENQVE TRIDENTVM (mountains give me silver and the name of Trento) refers to the mythical origins of the city name. Before restyling, the façade used to illustrate a fresco depicting a decapitation - traditionally identified as the tragic epilogue to the 1407 revolt headed by Rodolfo Belenzani.
