Opening up to the Western side of via Santa Croce - the old Southern road of access to the city - the arch was supposed to be a monumental gateway to the poplar-lined avenue leading to the Palazzo delle Albere, the former suburban residence of the Madruzzo family.

Now disappeared, their coat of arms used to decorate the keystone of the vault. Nowadays Via Madruzzo overlaps the straight stretch of the ancient avenue, which was bisected by the railway in the 19th century. The arch is a massive work of limestone featuring three barrel vaults topped by rusticated, curvilinear tympanums ending in small spheres, which date back to 1550.
