The monumental 12-meter-high Neptune’s fountain was built by Francesco Antonio Gionco and inaugurated on the 26th of June 1769, on the occasion of San Vigilio festivity (the Patron Saint of Trento).

The fountain consists of several basins with the shape of a shell and is decorated with statues of mythological figures, as tritons, and marine creatures, as seahorses and dolphins. A bronze Neptune dominates the top of the monument: this statue is only a copy, as the original version, sculpted in 17th Century by Stefano Solteri, is nowadays conserved in the yard of Palazzo Thun, in order to be protected from bad weather.
The reason why Neptune was chosen as the subject for the fountain is not known. It could be supposed that the cause is the assonance between the ancient name of Trento, “Tridentum”, and the trident, Neptune’s symbol.
In 2019/2020 there isan ongoing renovation project with the purpose of restoring the fountain to its former beauty, 30 years after the first renovation and 15 years after the last emergency maintenance work. The total cost is 150.000€. With Artbonus it is possible to contribute to the renovation obtaining a tax cut (65% of the donated sum). All information about the project is available at www.artbonus.gov.it.
