THE CONTEMPORARY TOWN

The itinerary starts in Via Verdi, which was created at the end of XIX century; in this period a new city plan gave a new look to Trento according to the modern ideas of modernity and efficiency. In order to gain some space opening a new long way towards the Adige river, the houses that used to stand next to the cathedral were demolished. As a symbol of modernity, along this way a number of buildings related to culture, instruction and work were built: among them, the seat of the Società Filarmonica (Philarmonic Palace) (1), in a late-Renaissance style, the Palazzo degli Studi (2), which was born as the first public Primary School in Trento and later on hosted the prestigious Department of Sociology , and the industrial sawmill, that is the current seat of the Department of Law (3). Further on, you will see the Palazzo dell'Agricoltura, hosting now the Department of Economics (4), and the Molino Vittoria (5), initially used for cereals processing and now as a university library. Hereafter, the process of urban evolution continued and allowed some important architects to realize great projects. With a slight change of course from Via Verdi you will see the new seat of the Department of Liberal Arts (6) in Via Tommaso Gar. Walking further on, in Via da Sanseverino, you will reach the Palazzo delle Albere (8), impressive residence of the Madruzzo prince bishops, which now hosts the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In the nearby, an area with houses and shops of high urban quality according to the standards of low environmental impact and high energy efficiency. The focus of this project, made by Renzo Piano, is the new Trento Museum of Science, the so-called MUSE (9) and the new University Library.
