Casa Terlago archaeological area

In the basement of a prestigious building overlooking Via Belenzani it is possible to see a brief stretch of the cardo maximus, the main road of the Roman city, which starting from Porta Veronensis, the monumental entrance gate to the city on the southern side, channelled the traffic northwards to the Adige river.

Rendering of the Roman Trento

Like all the streets of Roman cities, cardo was paved with large slabs of local limestone, laid in a herringbone pattern in order to mitigate wear, and flanked by packed earth pavements. In the middle of the road, underneath the paving, ran the main sewer, which was built in brick. The absence of slabs in the central part of the road is due to the search for sewers carried out during the medieval-Renaissance period, in order to reuse them.
Directly on the street a small portion of a house (about 16 square meters) has been identified with a courtyard which maintained three walls and two floors (the first in pebbles and the second in stone slabs). The particularly complex stratigraphy shows that the area was used for a long period of time stretching to the Middle Age. Particularly interesting is the presence of a space equipped with an underfloor heating system.
