The church was built on the remains of an early Medieval church by Benedictines from Bergamo, summoned to Trento by Bishop Altemanno (1124-1149), in the second half of the 12th century.

The harmonious proportion - leit-motif of the Benedictine churches - stand out especially in the apse and in the presbytery, which is much higher than the hall, and is characterized by three apses. The church was initially built in the Romanesque tradition (Benedictine Age) and then finished in the Romanesque-Gothic style (Dominican Age).
During the Council, the neighbouring convent hosted illustrious Dominican theologians, who had taken over from the Benedictines in 1234. Closed in 1778, the convent was demolished in the 1930s.
