Early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio

Under the Cathedral of Trento visitors can admire the archaeological area of the ancient Paleochristian Basilica of San Vigilio, a remarkable building erected outside Tridentum’s city walls presumably towards the end of the 4th century A.D.

The archaeological area is closed to the public until 2022.

The ancient place of worship, rediscovered only in the 1970s, hosted for centuries the remains of the patron saint of the city and has recently been enhanced with videos, multimedia stations and viewers for virtual reality.
The building owes its first origin to the burial of Saints Sisinio, Martirio and Alessandro, killed by the pagans on the 29 May 397 in Val di Non. The ancient place of worship, originally a cemetery basilica, became a cathedral church between the 9th and the 10th centuries, when the bishop's palace was moved to its proximity. Over the centuries, the church underwent some significant structural changes, including the addition of two lateral chapels, the division of the hall into three naves and the construction of a crypt which brought to a rise of the presbyteral area. The last interventions were concluded by bishop Altemanno, who reconsecrated this church in 1145. The church was then replaced in the 13th century by the current Cathedral. Still visible are the graves - all converging towards that of the patron saint Vigilio - the mosaic decoration placed near the presbyteral enclosure, some fragments of the sculpted plutei and the tombstones. In the middle of the vast hall there is the famous "Arca di San Vigilio" (XI-XII century), a particular funerary monument where, in the past, the remains of the patron saint were conserved.
