Porta Veronensis

From the entrance hall of Museo Diocesano in Piazza Duomo it is possible to access the archaeological space where the remains of Porta Veronensis are visible. This gate, built in the first century B.C., was the monumental entrance to Tridentum for those coming from the south. It was also the starting point of the city walls.

Closed to the public.

Remains of Porta Veronensis

In its structure the Porta Veronensis was gemina, i.e. with two twin arches flanked by two polygonal towers with sixteen sides, over 5 meters in diameter and two, perhaps three floors high. On a local red limestone paving, the bases of the two façades are clearly visible with the grooves in which the gate closures ran. The first remains of Porta Veronensis were discovered by chance during sewage works in the above square in 1920. Interesting is the presence of a short section of the cardus maximus, the main north-south road that, starting from the gate, channelled the traffic northwards to the Adige river. The remains still show the grooves produced by the passage of heavy carts.
Unfortunately, only the western part of the gate has been preserved, while the eastern part was incorporated into the foundations of the Torre Civica (Civic Tower), built after 1000.
