This tower is an exceptionally well-conserved medieval building which was the Western bastion of city walls, in the point where they were lapped by the Adige River.

ph Luisella Decarli

Prince-Bishop Federico Vanga (1207-1218) ordered the erection of the building over a preexisting fortification, during the first years of his bishopric. The embattled jutting section - softened by mullions - was built later. A covered wooden bridge connected the tower to the opposite bank of the river, where the isolated Abbey of San Lorenzo stood.

The place also featured the gate, which accessed the road leading to Giudicarie valleys and Lombardy region. During the revolt of 1407 the Prince-Bishop Giorgio of Liechtenstein was imprisoned in the tower, from that moment the building served as a prison.

Today, the tower is the temporary seat of the Museo nazionale storico degli alpini which will be reopened to visitors in its original permanent seat on Doss Trento.
