Intrigues and mysteries at the time of the Concilio

Trento owes its charm to the Council, a great event of Christianity that took place here between 1545 and 1563 and which transformed the city into a European capital with hundreds of cardinals, prelates, ambassadors and nobles.

This was an opportunity for an unprecedented urban renewal, which gave the city a Renaissance touch that is still a defining characteristic today. This thematic itinerary leads through the crucial places of the Council: it starts from Castello del Buonconsiglio, once the main place of power, of arts and festivals and continues towards the Convent of San Marco, where the main exponents of the Order of the Augustinian lived. The itinerary continues to the city-center where you can appreciate the Church of Santa Trinità, from which the procession of the inauguration of the assembly started, the massive Torre del Massarello - where the homonymous Secretary of the Council resided, and the elegant Palazzo Roccabruna, at the time of the Council rented by the Count of Luna and now Casa dei Prodotti Trentini. The route touches Casa Cazuffi-Rella, characterised by the most important frescoed facade of Renaissance Trento, the Cathedral of San Vigilio, where the official sessions of the Council took place and where the Crucifix still remains in the chapel carrying the same name. Finally, Palazzo Thun, at the time one of the main noble recidences of the city, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the main congregations where held, and Palazzo delle Albere, an extra-urban residence that hosted banquets and tournaments for the occasion. Among the iconographic testimonies of the Tridentine assembly, there are two eighteenth-century paintings depicting the opening and closing of the Council in the Cathedral of San Vigilio and a painting of 1633 depicting a general congregation in Santa Maria Maggiore. These paintings are kept in the Museo Diocesano Tridentino.
